Little Discoveries

Happy Hallow's Eve - are you excited?! Tonight I'll be staying in to binge-watch on Netflix with J and *hopefully* get some homework done. Also, I'm still not sure what I'm dressing up as tomorrow night - a bit on the late side, but I'm sure something will be figured out!

I Love Sales | I am currently obsessing over this adorable blogger tee and this beach rules box sign - my bathroom back home is beach-themed and I think this would be such a cute addition. PrepObsessed is currently putting a lot of their items on sale - AND if you use "MikkaelaS10" at checkout, you'll get an extra 10% off.

Wednesday was a Record Day | In case your history buff friends from high school didn't notify you this past Wednesday, the longest period of time between deaths of presidents was recorded. Now I know what you're thinking - you're pretty confused. But take a second to really think about it, it is a bit sad but in a small way, isn't it kind of cool? Obviously great for the nation, but just as a general concept it is interesting to think about.

Adidas Collaboration | Wednesday was not only a historically interesting day, but it's also when I announced my collaboration with Adidas to show off some of their new university gear! I was so happy to be able to work with them and would really appreciate it if you could take a look at what they have to offer!

National Geographic's Photo Contest | Every year, NG holds a photo contest and I love it. My main reason for my enthusiasm over it is that this contest helps increase exposure to cultures and lives around the world. Unfortunately, many people are unable to travel and experience different cultures, and things like this photo contest not only beautifully capture them, but share these moments and places with the world.

I hope y'all have a fun and safe Halloween and Halloweekend! What are you dressing up as?!

Game Day or Every Day?

*Thank you to Adidas and Her Campus Media for sponsoring this post!*

While I am always a fan of dressing up for game days, let's be honest for a second: sometimes looking good does not equal feeling good when you're surrounded by 15,000 of your loudest, closest friends (sort of).

I have definitely had my share of cute outfits, but some of my favorite game outfits are the ones that I don't need to worry about. I love dresses, but wearing them on windy days means spending more time wondering if your skirt is floating up rather than focusing on the game.

Remember when I said exciting things were happening with TSP? This is one of them! With Arizona State becoming an Adidas school, I have teamed up with them to show off some SunDevil pride (and some of their new clothes!).

Adidas sent me this outfit from their climalite® technology line and I absolutely love it. My first impression was that they were workout clothes, which they are, but I hadn't immediately considered the opportunities the ease of an outfit like this could bring - from running to the store for milk or down the street for the next game.

How can you not feel on top of the world watching the sunrise? I hiked A Mountain for the first time (I know, I know, a bit late on that tradition) with my new friend Jordan who is absolutely amazing for taking these pictures.

Jordan was a blast to work with - as you can see from my awkward laughing photos, he knew how to keep me smiling throughout the shoot, despite how early in the morning it was!

Thank you so much to all of you - without your sweet comments and endless support of TSP, I don't think it would have ever gotten this far. I am so excited to be meeting new people and working with more companies, and sharing them with y'all.

Laptop Totes

Lately I have been scouting out new totes to use every day for carrying my laptop and my excessive collection of colored pens because the bag I have been using is starting to rip at the bottom. I will be going home for Thanksgiving so fingers crossed that I find a good Black Friday deal on a new tote!

As I was searching through some different options, I found a couple I thought were pretty cute and thought I'd share them here! Whether you're using them for work or school, I love that totes are able to hold so much - my friends call me a pack rat, but I prefer Mary Poppins.

{ $60 and Under }

Do you like using totes or do you prefer backpacks?

Little Discoveries

I am up bright and early this morning for the C2: Consulting Across the Industries Conference! I have quite a few friends who have talked to me about the breadth of the consulting world, and I am starting to think it's a route I would like to explore.

After this conference (where I actually know two of the speakers so I am really excited to see them again!), I am off to the Pricewaterhouse Coopers Challenge Competition Rally! This year I am competing in a case study competition - crazy, slightly scary, but very exciting.

This day is pretty packed and it's only the beginning of the weekend! A lot more stuff will be going on and I can't wait to share it all with you! One of them is coming up next week, can't wait!

Dorm Inspiration | If you've been around TSP a while, then you know I absolutely adore Isabella Darden's blog Yep It's Prep. Her latest post gives a peek inside her room and I am beyond jealous - I'm still working on getting my room together, but when it's done I'll definitely be putting it up on here!

Another Reason to Go to Australia | I love milkshakes. Seriously, the number of times I've driven to Denny's, The Normal, or In'n'Out just for milkshakes this semester is slightly ridiculous. They're just so good, and with french fries? The best.

Preventing Burnout | Have you checked out the latest Freshman Five post? Even if you're not dealing with midterms, these are some good tips on how to keep yourself inspired and prevent the dreaded mid-semester/mid-quarter burnout!

Corgi v. Pumpkin | It's October and if you haven't seen this video yet then you're crazy and it's not officially Fall yet! So much adorableness in such a little body! A friend of mine is thinking about getting a corgi, and if they do, you know I'll be stealing it!

The Mini Bucket Bag You Need | In case you hadn't heard, merlot is the color of the season and this bag is PERF for big events like Fall festivals and State Fairs! The size is perfect for keeping the essentials but also keeping you from packing everything and the kitchen sink for Fall events. It's on sale, so it's totally okay to get it, right?!

What are you looking forward to this weekend?!

Freshman Five: How to Prevent Burnout

Midterms are here and almost everyone is feeling the heat of the semester kicking up a notch despite the sudden drop in temperature - today I am actually wearing jeans for the first time since I've been back from Europe! Mid-semester is when burnout can really start to happen and it's the worst place. I have put together a few of my tips for preventing burnout, hope they help!

Calendars Calendar Calendars | Repeat after me: my schedule is my best friend. Everything you do goes into the calendar. Some people are good at keeping track of things in their head but when you're stressed and have too many things on your mind, you can forget to do the online accounting quiz due at 10pm instead of midnight or you might forget to email the professor who offered to help you look for an internship. Your mind works better when you can lay out everything you have to do and then devote time to focusing on pieces as they come up.

Schedule Your Play Time | Some days I can get so busy that it's not until I'm in my fourth meeting of the day that I realize the only thing I'd eaten all day was the granola bar I had for breakfast. That's really bad. Living with Em this year has already been such a blessing, but this is one of the most important things she has taught me - sometimes I can be so focused on my to-do list that if lunch isn't written down, it's probably not going to happen. Giving yourself small, scheduled breaks can help break up study sessions and ensure you're not completely running on steam. Another fun thing to do is to build in fun to your course schedule - last semester I took Racquetball and an Advanced Literature course on Jane Austen! (Need help putting together your schedule for next semester? Here are a few tips!)

Hydrate or Die-drate | J has been trying to make this phrase a thing, and at least in our apartment, it's working. I have emphasized taking care of yourself in a few different posts (especially this one on what to do when you get sick in college!) but that's because it really matters. You cannot expect your body to be operating at 100% if you're not even hydrating yourself properly throughout the day. While this is important during the warmer months, this especially applies to the cold weather we are currently transitioning into - the cold makes my body want to essentially plant itself in my bed and never leave but oftentimes just hydrating in the morning gives me a little more energy to keep going.

Long Time No See? Go See! | Psychologically, we tend to relationally gravitate towards people with similar personalities and goals. This is great, but it also means that if you're like me and have many similarly-minded friends, there's a whole set of friends you barely see throughout the semester because they might not be as involved as you. Take out that planner and call up two of those friends and schedule a brunch, lunch, coffee, or dinner date with them. Sometimes you need a change of pace or perspective to inspire you to keep chugging on and catching up with old friends can do just that (plus you're seeing someone you know, you like and don't see often).

Encourage Yourself | Sunday night after you're done with your homework, take out 10 sticky notes. Write quotes of empowerment and inspiration on them, complex or simple - do a mix! Now stick them in your textbooks and notebooks for the classes that will have you the most stressed this week. If it's a bad week, you'll probably forget you did this. Throughout the week, as you stress out writing papers and taking notes, you may happen upon one of your notes and voila, you just gave yourself a piece of encouragement when you really needed it! Want to go a step farther? Team up with one of your classmates/friends/roommates and do this for each other!

Hope you find these helpful! Do you have any special ways you keep yourself from burning out?

Little Discoveries

Woo, so excited for this weekend! Tonight my roommates and I will be attending a really interesting debate by one of our favorite modern philosophers, and later this weekend my Chapter's pledge class will be hosting fundraisers and a community service event - it's going to be such a great relaxing weekend!

I'll be doing some fun stuff for the blog that I can't wait to share with y'all soon enough. For the time being, I am sharing my first piece of the big round of news that will becoming throughout the rest of the year on here!

FUN NEWS: KMSS | I am so happy to start off with a fun announcement that will be getting it's own post soon enough: I am very honored to announce that I have been selected as a Kiss My Southern Sass representative! I absolutely love everything this company stands for and am so happy to be working for them. Please please please check out the site (soo much great Southern, Sorority, and Big/Little stuff!) and use "SouthwestPrep" for a discount!

Baby Had Faith | I'm still slightly in shock. Jennifer Grey admitted that pretty much the most famous dance scene in film history was never really rehearsed, say what now?! Her comment about people who practice and re-enact the scene had me cracking up.

Latest Power Anthem | This song has been out a little while, but I have been constantly leaving it on repeat because Hailee Steinfeld is amazing and this song is just empowering and really fun to dance around to while getting ready for a presentation or going out with the girls!

Another New Obsession | One of my roommates, J, has recently introduced me to the wonderful world of candles and it is crazy. We walked out of Bath & Body Works with at least 3 large candles each and this was definitely my favorite scent!

What are you excited for this weekend?!

A Hump Day Reminder

Sometimes life gets super busy and you forget to take a minute to breathe and smile because you have already gotten yourself this far on your journey. I just wanted to put up a little reminder that you are beautiful and I hope y'all have an amazing day!

What is one thing you're really happy about today?

Happy Holiday?

Today is technically a holiday but many people have chosen to either simply not celebrate or protest the name "Columbus Day". I have a friend who was visiting Harvard this weekend and told me that there was a protest going on right next to her!

In case you are unaware of this movement, Christopher Columbus wasn't exactly a saint - being that his biggest accomplishment was "finding" America. Some schools have even taken the step in renaming the holiday themselves, like University of Alaska Southeast and Oklahoma University (Boomer Sooner!). Also, this happened and I couldn't help my laughter.

This may not seem like a big deal at first, but if you do a bit of research, it won't be hard to find multiple reasons to dislike Christopher Columbus. For the time being, however, enjoy your extra day off if you received one!

Little Discoveries

This Little Discoveries is very short for multiple reasons, one of them being that I wasn't sure whether I was going to publish this post or not.

Some of you may have heard that this morning there was a reported incident at Northern Arizona University. I have quite a few friends that go to NAU and I was very concerned when I woke up to the articles on my feeds.

I am currently unaware of the particulars of what happened other than that one person died and three others are injured. Whether you are religious or believe in vibes, please keep those affected in your thoughts.

How Not to Find a Mentor | As someone who is trying to break into difficult and saturated fields, I have relied heavily on finding mentors. I've never really thought about what not to do though!

Why are People Crazy | What is it with people and risking their belongings?! Extreme iPhone pinching is definitely a 'trend' you can bet I am not on! I love my phone and feel great when I catch it before it falls on the ground but I wouldn't want to do it over and over!

Is the Twitter Struggle Gone? | Apparently Twitter has got something in the works to get rid of that pesky 140 character limit. I really enjoyed reading their initial reasoning behind the character limit. Personally, I don't mind it that much unless I'm ranting haha.

What do you think? What are you looking forward to this weekend?

Need a Laugh? Got You Covered! YouTube Edition

Sometimes when I get super busy with school, life, and meetings taking up every possible second of my life (read: if there were more than 24 hours in a day, no matter how much would need it, I probably wouldn't sleep), I start to get into a funk and take everything way too seriously.

This is where my amazing best friends and roommates all come in. By now, they have all noticed this pattern *unfortunately* but this also means they've learned one of the best ways to break me out of it is to make me take a break and watch hilarious videos. Now I know sometimes people have different senses of humor so I included a few different favorites!

Gaby and Allison | Em showed me Gaby and Allison's channel and I never not laugh. TBH: avoid if you're not a fan blunt, slightly out-there humor. Some people have slightly more conservative tastes, but quite a few of their videos are enjoyable either way!

Stephen Colbert | I love Colbert. If you haven't watched anything with him yet, then you need to do it ASAP. Not only is he hilarious, but he makes people think just a little bit more about politics and to me, that's great.

Jimmy Fallon | The video I linked below is an oldie but a goodie - Fallon is one of the Forever Faves, from #MeanTweets to Lip Sync Battles to Wheel of Musical Impressions to just playing games like Charades!

BuzzFeed | Some videos may not be downright hilarious, but this one is pretty close! Some of the BuzzFeed videos I've seen have felt pretty accurate and one of my friends raved about this one.

Vlogbrothers | Saving the best for last: I. Love. Vlogbrothers. John and Hank Green are absolute baes and I love that I always feel like I learned something after watching every video. Fun Fact: Throughout my Spring semester of Freshman year, I watched the entire backlog of Vlogbrothers videos (over 2,136+ videos) until that point.

YouTube is a rabbit hole that I don't mind falling down because it eventually brings me back up. What's something that makes you laugh?

Mini Crossbody Obssession

I love crossbody bags because they are so versatile and very easy to use for special occasions or on the go. Shopping is something that has unfortunately not been on my list of latest adventures, but I was going through some of the the items going on sale lately and I have seen quite a few crossbody bags going on sale so I thought I'd share them here with y'all!

Aren't these so cute? Which one do you like?!

Little Discoveries

A bit of a longer Little Discoveries this week because like life, it has just been buzzing non-stop. A lot of fun things have been put into the works and happening lately - I just can't wait to be able to share with y'all, it's so exciting!

Also, like the jewelry in the photo below? Join Rocksbox, a monthly jewelry rental subscription, with the code "theswprepxoxo" for your first month free! You can send it back and forth as many times as you want for new pieces (shipping both ways is covered) and if you decide you want to keep it, you can purchase any of the pieces at a discount. How cool is that?!

Necklace: a. v. max - Rocksbox (Similar) | Cuff: Gorjana - Rocksbox (Similar
Ring: Perry Street - Rocksbox (Similar) | Bow: Bows & Kites

The Skimm Life | I am a huge advocate of staying on top of what's going on in the world, despite how busy your life can get. Every morning as I rush to my classes and chew my granola bar, I read The Skimm and New York Times in my inbox. This is not only the easiest way to keep yourself in-the-loop but also for small-talk in meetings and interviews!

A Quick Word From the First Lady | One of the things that has been emphasized in my politics class this semester is that the Presidency really isn't just about the President - there are many other aspects but let's focus on the First Lady for a minute. Michelle Obama has done a lot of work over the past few years on healthy living and female empowerment - this quick video is just a small, cute little piece of it!

DC Food Tours - Where Do I Sign Up | I have followed Katie's blog for about as long as I've been blogging, and she never fails to leave me slightly upset that I don't live on the other side of the country! Warning: Don't read this post if you're not prepared to die over the sounds of the amazing food tours!

Better than the Selfie Stick? | All of the photos I have of me and my dog include her looking away or trying to lick me - not a single selfie with my pup! At one point, I attempted the use of a selfie stick with the dog and let's say that didn't turn out well... This popped up on my feed a few days ago and just thought I'd share because puppies and selfies are real baes.

The Stages of Coffee Detox | Considering the unhealthy amount of caffeine I have consumed this week alone, I thought I'd share this because trying to come off of a long coffee week is rough, especially for college kids!

Chasing Life No More | I really liked ABC Family's Chasing Life, it was a nice change of pace compared to some of their other shows. Unfortunately, after only the second season, the show has been cancelled for low ratings. To be honest, I haven't watched in a while because I've been busy, but also because I'm still a bit salty about a certain character death. Maybe other people agree?

Your Uber Driver is Rating You | In the back of my mind, I knew this was happening but it hadn't really registered in my mind until now. I have been using Uber quite a bit lately for meetings that are a bit close to campus but don't have any parking. Not sure if I want to check my score, will you?

I am ready for the weekend - are you? What are you looking forward to?

xx
Catch you next time.
